Your brain does need fuel, primarily glucose, but excess amounts of glucose can have a negative impact. Excess amounts of sugars can impair your cognitive skills and your self-control. A little bit of sugar acts like a drug to your brain and stimulates you to crave more. Sugar specifically targets the reward center of the brain. High-sugared foods activate regions of the reward center of the brain and increases feelings of hunger compared to low-sugared foods. This drug-like effect on the brain causes some individuals to experience sugar addictions. Evidence shows that overeating alters the brains’ reward systems; therefore, over time, greater amounts of sugar is required to reach the same level of reward. Sugar acts like a drug and will cause an individual to crave more and more of it.
